A Fashion Degree Is a Perfect Choice For Creative, Design Oriented Individuals

When shopping for clothing do you find yourself scrutinizing the design, critiquing the costumes? While watching your television programs are you more engrossed in the characters' wardrobe and footwear than their witty repartee? If fabric and form are appealing to you then a career in fashion design may be what you are looking for.

A language all its own, fashion tells a story about the wearer whether it's street-wise adventurer or tres chic. People choose clothing and accessories to portray how they wish to be perceived by others. Make no mistake about it; fashion is big business with millions of workers designing, sewing, gluing, dyeing and transporting clothing daily.

Whether the skirt lengths are long or short, wide or a-line, the only consistency in the fashion industry is change. Many things influence our choices and guide our decisions as to what we may buy and what we will wear. Movies, television, music and celebrities have a distinct impact on how we dress as evidenced by the Royal wedding and the princess's affect on women's fashion around the world.

Jobs in the fashion industry are varied and plentiful. Some of the careers to choose from include: Journalist, covering industry news, trends and shows; Stylist, applying fashion knowledge and personal style and the like; or Marketer, helping to shape and create an image. Employment is generally concentrated in regional fashion centers, the highest concentration being New York and California.

Some of the best jobs are found with the larger design firms that design and mass-market clothes sold in retail chains and department stores. It's no wonder that billions of fashionable items are sold each year and tremendous revenue is gained from clothing designs, jewelry, and footwear. Among all the employment options from which to choose one thing is certain; the competition will be fierce.

According to different studies, there are over twenty thousand jobs in fashion annually. Despite the difficulties in our current economy, little to no change is expected going forward. Whether your interests lie in design and production or buying and selling, the job market in fashion appears to be a promising one.

As in some other fields, fashion requires certain innate abilities to be successful. Interested individuals should possess a sense of style and color and symmetry of fabric. Although a high school diploma may gain entrance to ground-level positions in other professions, a minimum of an Associate's Degree is required for entry-level positions in fashion. Those seeking higher paying jobs should pursue a Bachelor's Degree to help them develop the unique skill sets needed to compliment their natural abilities.
